BioHacker Derek Jacoby at MakerSpace

Hi all,

Join Biohacker Derek Jacoby to learn about the exploration uniting technology & nature to optimize life. He will be talking about BioHacking; what it is, how it affects us every day, and more. It’s sure to be a wonderfully informative speech and well worth attending.

Derek is co-founder of Makerspace Victoria and co-founder of Biospace – Canada’s first biotech community lab located in Victoria. Derek is a graduate of Rice University and is currently completing PhD studies at the University of Victoria. He spent a decade at Microsoft Research where he developed & designed speech recognition systems. He is also a member of the Lifeboat Foundation serving on their Biotech Medical Board, Information sciences Board and the Robotics and AI Board.

Level 2 Soldering Workshop

Our level one soldering workshops have been quite popular and we’ve had some great feedback, and now it’s time to announce our level 2 soldering workshop!  In this workshop, participants will assemble and solder a Conway’s Game of Life kit, which includes soldering an Integrated Circuit, 16 LEDs and resistors, and more!

This workshop will take place on October 17th, 2015 at 1 PM.  Spaces are limited and you are strongly urged to sign up now if you’re interested!  The cost for this workshop will be $20 for Makerspace members, and $25 for the general public.  Please email soldering@makerspacenanaimo.org to reserve your spot.

Can’t make this workshop?  Keep your eyes peeled!  This workshop and others will be offered again in future!

Garage Sale August 8th

After our last garage sale, unfortunately we still had a fair bit of equipment and goods left over.  We’re going to be hosting a second round, with the goal of getting rid of some of the awesome equipment we already have too much of – there will be some great finds including audio equipment, oscilloscopes, and some radio equipment perhaps.  Come on by and check out what we’ll have – August 8th from 9 AM to 1 PM at 2221 A McGarrigle Road!

Beat the Heat

Hey, all!

It’s hot out there!  With the heat wave going on, it’s important to stay cool.

  • Watch for signs of heat stroke, and keep well hydrated!
  • A hat is a great way to keep cool
  • The young and the elderly are especially vulnerable!  Take extra special care to keep cool!
  • Have a fun and safe summer!

Tube Amp Workshop

Have you ever dreamed of owning an audio vacuum tube amplifier or even built your own?
Reading the schematic of a tube amplifier can seem like you’re staring at ancient Sanskrit!
    Victor Kung from VKMusic will be at Makerspace to guide you through the process of building your own amplifier.
You can either bring your own tube amp kit or choose from one of Victor’s. Choose from one of the following kits during the registration process,

During the event we will have presentations on amps and speaker cabinets.

  • 10am Saturday 27th, Makerspace is opening the doors
  • 11am Saturday 27th, the workshop begins
  • 1pm Saturday 27th, Ryan Bouma the designer of the “The Elusive 1099” speaker kit. “Picking, Building, and Listening to a DIY Speaker Kit”. Ryan will present his kits, tell you anything about speakers and what what to consider when buying one. He will give you advice on how to measure your speaker project properly.
  • 2pm Saturday 27th, Victor Kung will present different tube amp designs and share his passion with you.
  • 3pm Saturday 27th, David Dlugos will informally speak on speaker design.
    (planet10-hifi, maker of EnABLed Fullrange drivers, flat-paks, frugel-horns included & bespoke finished loudspeakers).

If you are passionate about amps and speakers and would like to share your experience or try your equipment in combination with different components then come to Makerspace and bring your latest audio project.
This weekend is the perfect way to experience the Makerspace and meet other audiophile enthusiasts. Bring speaker drivers, amp circuit boards and hack a new optimized version of your DIY Pringle-CartoonBox-3Dprinted-LED-robotic audiophile project. Dissassamble your old desktop speakers and create something new.

Potluck, Tuesday April 14th

Hi All,

Tuesday, April 14th will be our April Potluck.  The potluck will be at 6, followed by a Project Show & Tell centered around a Reflow Oven project one of our members is working on.  We will also be looking for someone to sign up for a Project Show & Tell for the May potluck.
